Me and my Dad rebuilt his 96 dodge ram steering & suspension - new ball joints, tie rods, everything! Didn't help the steering slop much at all. The play in the steering was almost frightening and at highway speeds almost dangerous. We had put in an Aftermarket Cardone steering box and it wasn't great. I read the reviews here, did a little research and all these reviews are spot on. After installing this Gearbox there was no steering play at all - Absolutely Awesome! It did take my Dad a little getting used to but loves it now. I would say my only reget is - if your having this issue, before you spend $800 rebuilding the suspension like we did, try replacing the steering box with this RedHead first, you might find it's all you need.

I rebuilt my entire front end with the exception of the steering box. Truck was tighter but still wandered like a typical Dodge. I order a RedHead steering box, the truck still had issues, which after contacting customer service I determined were all my doing. The truck now drives better then it has in the 20 years I have owned it. Great product, great customer service, incredibly fast next day delivery. Highly recommended.

Terrible gear box had it installed by a shop professionally it lasted 14 months 9000 miles when it started leaking now its junk and i get to buy another one. Will be looking for other brands with better customer service.

Replaced the old leaky gearbox with a Redhead. Oh my gosh, the reviews are 100% spot on! This box will absolutely get rid of your sloppy Dodge "death steer". You know, you're constantly turning the wheel three or four inches each way just to go straight down the road? Put one of these in and you will take care of that. Period. What a great product. Thank you folks at Redhead for making quality stuff here in the USA. God Bless all y'all.

My steering wheel had loads of slop. I added a new stabilizer, added the frame brace, checked the connections everywhere and even replaced a couple end links. Helped, but really masked the problem.

I decided to go with the RedHead upgrade and it made a MASSIVE difference. The wheel is tight but smooth. Firm and light.

If you are reading this page, it means your truck has the same issue. THIS WILL FIX IT.

1996 2500 5.9l with 340k miles. Had three inches of steering play before. After install very light input to turn, better feel of road conditions. Does take an adjustment to adapt to. Very impressed.

Well, my 2001 Ram Quad Cab 4x4 needed a new steering gear.
Original box was a "Variable Assist" box (13:1 at slow speed, 17:1 at higher speed)
This box is a 13:1.

It's taking some getting used to, but it is tight, plenty of power to turn 285x16" tires & effort is light as a feather at any speed.

I don't get a lot of road feel other than the tires grip the little inconsistencies in the road & with tight steering it doesn't take much movement of the steering wheel to move the truck at highway speeds.

I would purchase this again if needed. If I build a project truck, I would ask Redhead to rebuild the stock box.
